Harry C. Elliott, III is well aware the company he heads bears his name. It bears his grandfather’s and his father’s name. He knows that in their day, buying an Elliott built home meant quality and attention to detail. It meant a good home at a fair price. It meant creating neighborhoods where living was enjoyable. He is determined to keep that tradition going.

The first Harry C. Elliott built a five story brick hotel in Aberdeen Washington in the early 1900’s. It is still a landmark in that city. In 1950, H.C. Elliott, Jr. partnered with a Japanese nursery to build a cul-de-sac with six homes on two acres—the first Elliott Homes Community.

Now, one out of three people living in Folsom live in an Elliott home. They have built more than 6000 new homes in Phoenix, Arizona since expanding there in 1978.

 “I want to leave an impact. Not many jobs have results that last through time. People live their entire lives in our neighborhoods. When I’m building a home, it’s going to be an Elliott home forever. Why would I cut corners on something with my name on it?” says Elliott.

 A family owned company is very different from a publicly owned company. Large publicly traded builders have to be intensely business oriented. They aren’t necessarily in the business of homebuilding—they are in the business of protecting their stockholder’s interests. “We can’t run in and buy lots, spew out houses and then leave the community. We create neighborhoods which are better for people, neighborhoods people want to live in, and we remain a part of those neighborhoods.”

Elliott Homes last built in Santa Barbara in 1975. On a recent trip Elliott read of a home for sale. It was advertised as “an Elliott home.” That is the legacy he inherited, that is what he will pass on. “My heirs can say, ‘We built this—my grandfather built this.’ That’s the fun part!”
